363. [Smith, Ransom J. (1839-1900)]. Group lot of 77 letters, January 12, 1861-December 30, 1872. A resident of Georgia, Vermont, Smith manufactured Smith’s Green Mountain Renovator and other patent medicines at the St. Albans Remedy Company. During the Civil War he served in Company I, Tenth Vermont Infantry, from August 9, 1862, to June 22, 1865. Majority of lot is 65 letters from Smith to family and friends during his wartime service: includes detailed accounts of his life in the Army and the regiment’s activities, including action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Cedar Creek. Stamped and some stationary envelopes for most of the letters. Also a few family letters and two other soldier letters, from G. R. Bates, Company H, Eighth Vermont Infantry (May 7, 1863, “hard fiting” at Chancellorsville) and C. F. Laflin, Company A, Fifth Vermont Infantry, April 26, 1864. An excellent Vermont Civil War archive.
