Van Metre, Clark County, Virginia, who saved the life of Lieut. Henry E. Bedell, First Vermont Heavy Artillery, wounded and abandoned at the Battle of Opequan, Sept. 13, 1864. Bedell subsequently secured the release of Van Metre’s husband from a Union prisoner-of-war camp. Condition: good.
